Amazon discontinued its "Blue Jay" warehouse robot project in January. The company introduced the project in October.

High costs and manufacturing complexity drove the decision. Implementation difficulties also halted the project. Amazon designed the robots for same-day delivery warehouses.

Amazon reassigned Blue Jay staff to other internal robotics projects. The company will integrate Blue Jay technology into future systems. This move represents a strategic pivot in automation.

New projects include the "Flex Cell" system and a modular warehouse design named "Orbital." The adaptable "Orbital" system features easier deployment. Amazon may use this system for micro-fulfillment inside Whole Foods stores.
