Alibaba's logistics subsidiary, Cainiao, has canceled its planned expansion at Liège Airport in Belgium, halting the construction of two new warehouses. This move marks a significant strategic pivot, scaling back ambitions to turn the location into a primary European e-commerce logistics hotspot. Cainiao will now concentrate on operating its existing infrastructure at the airport. The regional government in Wallonia confirmed the decision, emphasizing that Cainiao remains a strategic partner. This adjustment in European strategy contrasts with moves in other regions. On the same day, Alibaba's affiliate Ant Group announced a strategic investment in R2, a firm providing lending infrastructure in Latin America. The investment is aimed at improving credit access for small and medium-sized enterprises, signaling continued, albeit indirect, international expansion for Alibaba's ecosystem through its affiliates.
