Catherine So, the chief executive of Alibaba's South China Morning Post (SCMP), is stepping down from her role after more than three years. The departure is part of a broader leadership reshuffle at the Hong Kong-based newspaper aimed at navigating a global media industry downturn. Editor-in-chief Tammy Tam will take on the newly created role of publisher, assuming many of So's business-focused responsibilities. Long-time deputy Chow Chung-yan will become the new editor-in-chief. The changes, set to take place in December, are intended to better align the newspaper's main editorial product with its business operations, according to a staff memo from Alibaba chairman Joe Tsai. This executive change occurs as media organizations worldwide face challenges from macroeconomic uncertainty and shifting consumer habits toward new platforms. Alibaba acquired the historic newspaper in 2015, and this move signals a strategic effort to adapt the SCMP's business model to the current challenging media landscape.
