India’s indigenous Akash air defence system has secured three overseas customers, marking a significant development for the country’s defence export ambitions.

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) is a key industrial partner in the Akash program. It manufactures the system’s electronic and associated systems, including the radar. The export success reflects the maturation of India’s domestic missile design and production ecosystem.

Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Akash is designed to engage a variety of aerial targets at ranges of up to 30 km. The newer Akash NG version extends the range to 50 km.

Recent conflicts have highlighted the growing global importance of air defence. This trend could create further export opportunities for BEL and strengthen its role in India’s defence manufacturing landscape.
