Google launched TranslateGemma, a new set of open AI models for on-device and offline text translation. Built on the Gemma 3 model family, TranslateGemma supports 55 languages. Google is openly releasing the models for developers and researchers to integrate into their applications.
The models are specifically designed to run locally on devices, such as smartphones, avoiding reliance on cloud infrastructure. This key feature allows TranslateGemma to function without an internet connection, targeting mobile and low-connectivity environments.
TranslateGemma is available in three sizes to accommodate hardware ranging from mobile phones to laptops. U.S. markets were closed on January 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Consequently, the announcement generated no immediate market reaction.
