Meta will introduce a new, universal age verification system, 'AgeKey,' across its platforms in 2026. Antigone Davis, Meta’s Head of Security, announced the plan in an interview with the Financial Times. The initiative aims to standardize compliance with differing age-verification laws globally.
The 'AgeKey' system utilizes passkey technology. It relies on biometric data, such as fingerprints or facial recognition, already stored on a user's device. This method avoids requiring users to share personal documents.
Meta collaborates with Singapore-based company K-ID to integrate the technology.
The rollout responds to tightening global regulations. Governments worldwide, including those in Australia and Europe, are increasing scrutiny on minors’ access to social media platforms.
