BYD launched the Racco on Tuesday, marking its first entry into Japan's electric kei car market. This segment accounts for approximately one-third of all Japanese auto sales. The launch challenges established domestic brands including Nissan, Honda, and Suzuki.
The entry-level model costs less than 2 million yen after government subsidies. This price is approximately $12,200. This pricing undercuts the Nissan Sakura, a primary competitor.
The vehicle offers two battery options. The standard battery provides a driving range of 210 km. The extended battery offers a range of 320 km. The Racco is the first electric kei car in Japan to surpass a 300 km range.
BYD aims to reach 10,000 orders for the model by the end of 2026. The company intends to boost its brand recognition and overall sales volume in the Japanese market.
