Alfen N.V. signed a memorandum of understanding with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) to deploy 5 GWh of sodium-ion battery energy storage systems. The agreement targets deployments across Europe starting in 2027.
This initiative marks the first large-scale application of CATL’s sodium-ion technology in the European market. Alfen will use the partnership to diversify its battery portfolio beyond lithium-ion.
The collaboration aims to optimize costs and reduce the impact of lithium price volatility. CATL will gain operational experience with sodium-ion batteries on the European power grid. The two firms have collaborated on lithium-ion projects since 2023.
