Amazon’s autonomous driving unit, Zoox, launched its fully autonomous robotaxi service in San Francisco. This expansion follows the company's initial rollout of paid rides in Las Vegas.
The purpose-built electric vehicles operate without steering wheels or pedals. Each cabin accommodates up to four passengers in a face-to-face seating configuration.
The San Francisco deployment places Zoox in direct competition with Alphabet’s Waymo. Amazon acquired the startup in 2020 to pursue new long-term growth avenues.
The unit remains small relative to Amazon's core retail and cloud businesses. The future financial contribution of the robotaxi division remains uncertain.
