Aptiv PLC has launched its Advanced Occupant Classification (AOC) system. It is the first solution to detect passengers using only an in-cabin camera. The system utilizes artificial intelligence and computer vision to identify occupant size, weight, and posture to optimize airbag deployment.
Replacing traditional in-seat hardware reduces bill-of-materials costs by up to 40%. This streamlined architecture decreases assembly time and provides automakers with greater seating design flexibility.
The AOC system achieved 100% accuracy during U.S. federal regulation testing. It supports over-the-air updates to maintain compliance with evolving safety standards. Aptiv will demonstrate the technology at the InCabin USA event in Detroit starting June 9, 2026.
