Atea Pharmaceuticals launched a first-in-human Phase 1 clinical trial for AT-587. This oral antiviral candidate targets the hepatitis E virus (HEV).

No approved therapies currently exist for HEV. The virus can cause serious liver disease, particularly in immunocompromised patients.

The study evaluates the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of AT-587 in healthy volunteers. Preclinical data demonstrated potent antiviral activity for the candidate.

This milestone moves a key pipeline candidate into the clinical stage. The trial represents a crucial step in expanding Atea’s portfolio of antiviral therapeutics.
