Berkshire Hathaway Inc. has been named the world's largest insurer by nonbanking assets, according to rankings published by AM Best in January 2026. The report indicated that Berkshire Hathaway's assets grew to $1.15 trillion, placing it at the top of the list for the first time.
The company surpassed Allianz SE to claim the leading position. This new ranking ends Allianz SE's five-year streak as the leader in the nonbanking asset category.
In a separate ranking based on net premiums written, UnitedHealth Group maintained its top position. Berkshire Hathaway placed ninth in this metric.
Analysts suggest Berkshire's ascent in the asset rankings highlights the growing scale of large, diversified multinational insurers.
