Canadian National Railway (CN) praised the U.S. Surface Transportation Board's (STB) decision. The STB froze its review of a proposed merger between Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern. The regulator halted proceedings, citing the revised application was unclear, underdeveloped, and lacked sufficient detail.

CN stated the STB's move validates its position against the merger. The company argues the combination would reduce rail competition, harm shippers, and create supply chain risks. The proposed transaction would control about 40% of U.S. freight rail traffic.

The STB ordered Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern to provide substantial supplemental information. The deadline for this information is late July. This delays the potential timeline for the deal's approval.
