The UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched a formal investigation into eBay’s $1.2 billion acquisition of Depop. Regulators announced the probe on June 8, 2026. The investigation assesses whether the merger reduces competition within the UK second-hand fashion market.

eBay originally agreed to purchase the platform from Etsy Inc. in February. This acquisition targets younger Gen Z consumers as a core business strategy. The CMA set an August 6, 2026, deadline for its initial decision.

The regulator may approve the deal, require concessions, or launch an in-depth Phase 2 investigation. eBay faces significant termination fees if the acquisition fails to gain regulatory approval.
