SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell confirmed the company is considering building a land-based cellular network in the United States. This infrastructure would support a new consumer-facing Starlink wireless service. Shotwell disclosed the plans during a recent IPO roadshow.
The move signals an ambition to compete directly with incumbents AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. SpaceX intends to offer mobile contracts directly to consumers, expanding beyond its current satellite-to-cell partnership with T-Mobile.
SpaceX has already completed significant spectrum acquisitions to support the potential rollout. While some analysts view the announcement as a negotiating tactic, the entry of a fourth major competitor could disrupt market pricing and accelerate infrastructure investment.
