GoDaddy is appealing a New Delhi High Court ruling that prohibits domain registrars from offering default privacy protection. The order requires companies to disclose a buyer's personal details within 72 hours to any party demonstrating a legitimate interest. This mandate aims to curb online fraud and the impersonation of major brands.

GoDaddy argues the directive exposes website owners to global privacy risks such as stalking and harassment. The company contends the December 2025 order conflicts with international data protection laws like the EU’s GDPR, which mandate privacy by default.

The registrar described the court directives as commercially destabilising. GoDaddy warned the ruling may force it to exit the Indian market, which it currently identifies as its largest emerging-market region.
