General Motors (GM) will eliminate the midnight shift at its Oshawa plant by January 30, 2026. The company transitions to a two-shift operation.
This reduction impacts approximately 750 GM employees directly. Additionally, nearly 1,500 individuals working for auto part suppliers face job losses.
GM announced the decision in May. The company attributes the shift to an "evolving trade environment." Specifically, GM cited the 25 percent U.S. tariff on auto parts as a contributing factor.
Attention now focuses on how the city of Oshawa will manage the potential increase in unemployment resulting from these layoffs.
