Alphabet is officially retiring Google Assistant on smart speakers and displays. The company is replacing the legacy service with its more advanced Gemini for Home AI.

The rollout began with early access in late 2025 and now extends to all devices manufactured since 2016. Once a user opts in, the transition is permanent and irreversible for their entire Google Home setup.

The new interface understands natural language and handles multi-step commands without requiring a wake word for follow-up questions. While the basic upgrade is free, advanced features like Gemini Live require a Google Home Premium subscription. This move integrates Gemini AI across Alphabet's entire product ecosystem.
