Alphabet reported an 18% increase in its greenhouse gas emissions in 2025. This surge stems from the energy-intensive demands of its artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The company's latest environmental report detailed a 37% rise in electricity consumption. It also noted a 25% increase in supply chain emissions. These supply chain emissions primarily resulted from hardware manufacturing and data center construction.

This growth in emissions challenges Google's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2030. Its carbon footprint now stands 81% higher than its 2019 baseline. The company acknowledged its AI infrastructure is expanding faster than the electrical grid is decarbonizing. Google matched 100% of its electricity use with renewable energy purchases for the ninth consecutive year.
