Anthropic’s AI chatbot, Claude, reached the number two position on Apple’s U.S. free apps chart. The app now ranks as the primary competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This surge in consumer interest follows a public dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon regarding military applications of AI technology.

The disagreement centers on Anthropic’s refusal to disable ethical safeguards that prevent Claude’s use in mass surveillance or fully autonomous weapons systems. The Pentagon demanded unrestricted access for all lawful purposes. Officials threatened to designate Anthropic as a national security supply-chain risk. This designation could prevent the company from working with government contractors.

CEO Dario Amodei stated the company cannot in good conscience accede to the Pentagon's demands. The public standoff appears to have increased the app’s popularity among general consumers.
