Google has entered into its most substantial agreement for carbon removal credits by financing the restoration of the Amazon rainforest. The deal, made with Brazilian startup Mombak, aims to offset 200,000 metric tonnes of carbon emissions, marking a significant step in the tech giant's efforts to mitigate the environmental impact of its power-intensive data centers used for artificial intelligence. This agreement highlights a growing trend among major technology companies to seek high-quality carbon offsets as they expand their AI capabilities and associated energy consumption. While the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, it represents Google's sole provider of forestry-based carbon credits and is four times larger than a previous pilot agreement between the two companies.
