The UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) mandates two new conduct requirements for Google's search services. These aim to ensure fairness and increase competition.
The first rule requires Google to enhance transparency and objectivity in ranking organic search results. This includes its AI-generated overviews. Google must provide businesses advance notice of significant ranking changes. It must also establish a clear process for addressing concerns.
The second requirement compels Google to allow users to transfer their search data to authorized third parties. This aims to enable other companies to offer personalized services and discounts, fostering innovation.
Google has six months to comply with the fair ranking requirement. It has three months for the data portability rule.
