Chinese AI firm Zhipu AI launched its latest flagship model, GLM-5.2, under a permissive MIT open-source license. Shares of the company, trading as Knowledge Atlas Technology in Hong Kong, surged significantly following the announcement. The strategic release aims to attract global developers as access to top US models becomes increasingly restricted.

The new model prioritizes complex software engineering and agentic workflows rather than general-purpose chatbots. It features a 1 million-token context window, marking a fivefold increase from its predecessor. This capacity allows the system to process entire code repositories or extensive documents in a single instance.

Zhipu positions the model as a serious alternative to offerings from Google, Anthropic, and Microsoft-backed OpenAI. While independent performance benchmarks are not yet available, the open-source availability targets a growing demand for accessible high-end AI tools.
