Alphabet’s Waymo is exploring an exit from its autonomous vehicle partnership with Uber. Internal discussions involve terminating deals that allow Uber to offer Waymo robotaxis in Austin and Atlanta.
The relationship soured due to operational disagreements and conflicting lobbying efforts for robotaxi legislation. Waymo raised concerns regarding service quality on the Uber platform. Uber cited issues with vehicle unavailability during bad weather and unfavorable financial terms.
Uber shares fell over 4% on Friday following the news. Waymo notified Uber of plans to enter these markets independently in January 2028. This date marks the earliest possible exit permitted under their current contract.
