The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved a significant expansion for Alphabet’s autonomous driving unit, Waymo.
The decision authorizes Waymo to operate commercial robotaxi services across 18 California counties.
This expansion marks Waymo’s first entry into the Sacramento market.
The company will also launch commercial operations in San Diego.
The ruling permits expanded services in the San Francisco Bay Area and greater Los Angeles.
Waymo will execute a gradual rollout guided by its internal safety framework.
The regulatory approval follows a review process that began in January.
