Taiwan labor unions formally petitioned the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) to block Grab Holdings' acquisition of foodpanda.
The unions argue the deal would create a de facto monopoly. They highlight that Grab's largest shareholder, Uber Technologies Inc., already operates the primary competitor, Uber Eats.
A recent survey indicates nearly 90% of delivery workers oppose the transaction. Workers fear the merger will diminish competition and reduce their bargaining power and income.
The FTC expects to issue a decision on the merger application by the end of July. This organized opposition creates a significant hurdle for Grab's expansion strategy in Taiwan.
