Goldman Sachs senior counsel Kathryn Ruemmler testified before the House Oversight Committee in a closed-door session. Lawmakers questioned the former chief legal officer regarding extensive communications with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The inquiry focused on emails and gifts exchanged between 2014 and 2019. These interactions occurred following Epstein's initial criminal conviction in 2008.
Ruemmler stated her emails were taken out of context and denied knowledge of ongoing criminal activity. She described Epstein as a masterful liar who used respectable individuals to legitimize his social standing.
Ruemmler recently vacated her role as chief legal officer but remains at the bank as senior counsel. Lawmakers criticized the decision to retain Ruemmler in her current capacity.
