IBM has established a new office in Chitose, Hokkaido, to expand its partnership with Japanese chipmaker Rapidus. The facility provides direct technical support for the development of 2-nanometer (2-nm) semiconductor technology.
Rapidus aims to begin mass production of these advanced chips by 2027. IBM will contribute manufacturing expertise and oversee core production systems to help Japan regain its status as a global semiconductor power.
Rapidus has already secured U.S. chip-design startup Tenstorrent as a prospective customer. Concurrently, IBM is advancing research into 1.4-nm technology to further push the boundaries of semiconductor innovation.
