Intel's CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, announced the company's entry into the graphics processing unit (GPU) market, a strategic move aimed at competing with industry leaders Nvidia and AMD. The announcement was made at the Cisco AI Summit, signaling a major expansion for Intel beyond its traditional focus on central processing units (CPUs).

The new GPU initiative will be part of Intel's data center group and is still in its early stages. Intel has hired key talent, including a new chief GPU architect, Eric Demers, a veteran from Qualcomm. The company emphasized that its strategy will be shaped by customer needs, with a focus on specialized tasks such as artificial intelligence model training and gaming.
