Intel tested wet etch chipmaking equipment supplied by ACM Research. The U.S.-based supplier’s overseas units in Shanghai and South Korea were previously sanctioned by the U.S. government. Intel evaluated the tools for potential use in its advanced 14A chipmaking process.
The 14A process is scheduled for an initial launch in 2027. Reuters found no evidence of regulation violations regarding the testing. Intel confirmed it complies with all U.S. laws concerning the evaluation.
Despite the compliance statements, the testing raised concerns among national security experts. These experts cite potential risks of technology transfer to China and supply chain vulnerabilities. Intel is central to U.S. efforts to boost domestic semiconductor production.
Intel confirmed that ACM’s tools are not currently used in its production process.
