Shares shifted sharply higher on Tuesday as IQE, the Welsh semiconductor wafer maker, told investors its first half crushed expectations and hiked full-year revenue growth guidance to above 30%, up from an already optimistic 20% target. The stock surged roughly 12% to 40.44p, adding about £40 million to a market capitalisation that sat near £362 million days ago. For a company coming off a bruising 2025, the question is whether AI demand is genuinely transforming IQE's economics — or merely inflating a cyclical bounce.

• The Guidance Jump Is Huge Relative to Where IQE Was a Year Ago. Full-year 2025 revenue fell to £97.3 million from £118 million, while adjusted EBITDA dropped 60% to £3.2 million.

Net loss was £36.7 million. Now IQE says 2026 revenue will grow more than 30%, implying roughly £126 million or above. It also indicated core profit would reach "the low-teens millions of pounds," a dramatic swing from near-breakeven. That trajectory would mark the fastest revenue recovery in years — but the bar was set low by a dismal 2025.

• AI Data-Centre Demand Is the Engine, and a Key Contract Backs It Up. IQE said demand for its Indium Phosphide solutions — specialty wafers used in the optical connections inside data centres — accelerated in the first half and would remain strong through the rest of the year. Underpinning that claim: in June, IQE signed a multi-year supply agreement with Tower Semiconductor for these wafers, targeting AI-driven data-centre optical connectivity.

The deal includes first-year minimum purchase commitments from Tower and reciprocal supply commitments from IQE. Locked-in volumes reduce the risk that this is just a one-quarter spike.

• Wireless and Defence Fill in the Gaps — for Now. IQE is also seeing ongoing strength in aerospace and defence markets, as well as 3D sensing and wireless products supporting consumer smartphones.

Wireless revenue collapsed 40% in 2025 , so even a modest handset recovery adds meaningfully to the growth figure. Investors should note that these segments are cyclical and vulnerable to tariff disruptions that hammered IQE before.

• The Balance Sheet Is Healthier but Still Fragile. IQE completed an £81 million fundraise that strengthened its capital structure, and its HSBC credit facility runs to September 2026. That looming refinancing deadline means management needs the momentum to hold. With ~980 million shares now outstanding, any profit improvement gets spread thin on a per-share basis. The upgrade is real — whether it justifies a stock that has already rallied 263% over the past year is the harder call.
