France's equalities regulator, the Défenseur des Droits, has ruled that Facebook's algorithm for placing job advertisements is sexist and results in indirect discrimination. The decision came after an investigation found that ads for roles like mechanics were predominantly shown to men, while those for preschool teachers were targeted at women. The watchdog concluded that the system treats users differently based on their sex. The regulator has recommended that Meta implement corrective measures and has given the company three months to report on the actions taken. This ruling appears to be the first of its kind from a European regulator concerning gender discrimination in a social media platform's algorithm. Meta has stated its disagreement with the decision and is currently evaluating its options.
