Meta is developing a facial recognition feature internally called Name Tag for its Ray-Ban smart glasses. The technology enables the onboard AI assistant to identify individuals and display personal information to the wearer. Meta intends for the feature to differentiate its hardware and increase AI utility within the competitive smart glasses sector.

The initiative follows Meta’s 2021 decision to shutter its Facebook face-scanning tool due to significant regulatory and privacy concerns. Meta officials stated the company is currently evaluating options and will adopt a cautious approach before any potential release. A 2024 experiment demonstrated that students could identify strangers by pairing the glasses with third-party software, highlighting persistent privacy risks.
