The UK's communications regulator, Ofcom, has launched an investigation into Meta Platforms over Instagram's Instants feature, introduced in May. Ofcom will examine whether Meta assessed the risks of illegal content and harm to children before launch, as required by the UK's new Online Safety Act.
Instagram Instants lets users share content that disappears after it has been viewed. Ofcom's enforcement director said platforms must assess significant changes before launch to make safety a core part of their design.
If Ofcom finds Meta in breach, the company could face a fine of up to 10% of its global revenue or £18 million, whichever is greater. Ofcom could also require Meta to make changes to comply with the law.
