France’s competition authority ordered Meta Platforms Inc. to resume negotiations with French news organizations over content payments. Meta must submit a detailed payment plan within 15 days.
The regulator found Meta’s fee calculation methods likely constitute an abuse of its dominant market position. The dispute centers on the European Union’s neighboring rights directive.
This directive allows media outlets to demand remuneration for the digital use of their content. A previous agreement with press associations expired in 2024.
French media outlets remain unpaid as parties have failed to agree on new terms following the expiration of the prior deal.
