Meta officially removed end-to-end encryption (E2EE) from Instagram Direct Messages on May 8, 2026. The company now possesses the technical ability to access all user DM content. This change eliminates a previous opt-in feature that prevented Meta from viewing private messages.

Meta first announced the policy shift in March. The company identified low user adoption of the E2EE feature as the primary driver for the decision.

Privacy advocates note the move contradicts Meta's previous public commitment to expanding encryption. The decision likely facilitates compliance with the U.S. Take It Down Act. This regulation requires platforms to detect and remove illicit content. Meta can now also leverage DM data to improve advertising algorithms and train its AI models.

Users seeking encrypted messaging are being directed to WhatsApp. Meta continues to provide E2EE as the default setting on that platform.
