Meta Platforms announced new parental supervision tools for Instagram that will allow parents to have more control over their teenagers' interactions with AI-powered chatbots. This move comes after criticism regarding the behavior of some of the platform's AI characters in conversations with minors. The new features, expected to roll out early next year in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, will enable parents to disable their teens' ability to have one-on-one chats with AI characters, block specific AI personalities, and view the general topics of their conversations with Meta's AI assistant. Even with these new controls, Meta's general AI assistant will remain available to teens with age-appropriate settings. The company stated that its AI characters are designed to avoid inappropriate discussions with teenagers on sensitive topics like self-harm.
