Meta has announced that Instagram will be adopting a new content moderation system for its teenage users, similar to the PG-13 cinema rating, in a move to give parents more robust control over their children's experience on the platform. Under this new system, users under the age of 18 will automatically be placed into a '13+' setting, which will have tighter restrictions on the types of content they can see. This includes hiding or not recommending posts that contain strong language, depict certain risky stunts, or promote potentially harmful behaviors. The platform will also block specific search terms that could lead to sensitive content. This update is scheduled to initially roll out in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, with a global release planned for early the following year. The announcement comes as Meta faces continued scrutiny over the safety of minors on its platforms, though some campaign groups have expressed doubts about how effective these new measures will be.
