Meta Platforms will begin manufacturing its custom artificial intelligence chip, codenamed Iris, in September. The project supports a strategic plan to double the company's total computing power to 14 gigawatts by next year. These in-house chips will supplement the high volume of GPUs Meta currently purchases from Nvidia.
Broadcom is designing the Iris chip, and TSMC will manage the manufacturing process. This shift aims to increase infrastructure independence and reduce long-term costs.
The move follows investor concerns over Meta's escalating AI spending, with capital expenditures projected between $125 billion and $145 billion this year. The custom hardware is expected to improve the performance and efficiency of AI models across Meta's social media platforms.
