Databricks, a data and AI giant, has acquired Row Zero, a Seattle-based startup that created a high-performance spreadsheet designed for massive datasets. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Row Zero was founded in 2021 by former Amazon Web Services engineers with the goal of building a spreadsheet that could handle millions of rows of data without performance issues.
The acquisition is a strategic move to integrate Row Zero's familiar spreadsheet interface directly into Databricks' AI platform, Genie. This will allow non-technical business users to analyze large datasets within the Databricks environment, aiming to keep data analysis connected to live, governed data rather than relying on unmanaged exported files. The move signals Databricks' push into AI tooling for general work.
