OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that ChatGPT has reached 100 million weekly active users in India. This milestone establishes India as the company’s second-largest market globally, trailing only the United States. Altman disclosed the data ahead of the Global AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi.
India now hosts the largest population of student ChatGPT users worldwide. OpenAI is expanding its domestic partnerships and operations to capitalize on this growth. The firm continues to scale its first regional office in Delhi, which was established in 2025.
