Microsoft has announced a $7 billion investment to develop two hyperscale AI data centers in Wisconsin, signaling a major push into building sustainable infrastructure for artificial intelligence. The first $3.3 billion facility in Mount Pleasant is nearing completion and is scheduled to open in early 2026. The campus is designed to train advanced AI models using hundreds of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs. A key feature of the new data centers is their focus on sustainability. Over 90% of the first facility will utilize a closed-loop liquid cooling system, significantly reducing water consumption. Microsoft also plans to match all fossil fuel energy consumed with carbon-free energy supplied back to the local grid, supported by a new 250 MW solar project. This initiative addresses the growing environmental concerns associated with the energy-intensive nature of AI model training.
