Microsoft has introduced Fara-7B, its first small language model (SLM) designed to operate a computer similarly to a human. Unlike larger models that rely on cloud computing, the lightweight Fara-7B can run directly on devices like Copilot+ PCs, analyzing screenshots to perform tasks such as clicking, typing, and navigating web pages. This development aims to lower the barrier for developers in computer use automation (CUA) technology by making powerful AI models more accessible. By enabling CUA models to run locally, Microsoft anticipates reduced latency and enhanced user privacy, as data does not need to be sent to the cloud. The model is being released as open-weight to encourage experimentation and advancement in automating everyday web tasks.
