Shares surged 6.6% to $280.81 after MACOM Technology Solutions crushed fiscal third-quarter estimates and issued fourth-quarter guidance that left Wall Street scrambling to revise models upward. The beat-and-raise cycle is becoming routine for this semiconductor maker — but the acceleration embedded in its outlook suggests something bigger is happening beneath the surface.
• Revenue Is Speeding Up, Not Slowing Down
Fiscal Q3 revenue hit $342.2 million, up 18.4% sequentially and 35.8% year over year.
That's a meaningful acceleration from Q2, where revenue was $289 million for a 22.5% year-over-year increase. In a semiconductor sector where growth typically decelerates as numbers get bigger, MACOM is doing the opposite — a signal that AI-related demand for its optical and connectivity chips is pulling forward orders faster than the company can build inventory.
• The Q4 Guidance Is the Real Story
MACOM expects Q4 revenue of $415–$425 million, with adjusted gross margins of 60%–61% and adjusted EPS of $1.97–$2.03. That midpoint of $420 million implies roughly 23% sequential growth — extraordinary for a single quarter. Management expects approximately 35% sequential growth in data center, approximately 20% in industrial and defense, and low single-digit growth in telecom. If delivered, quarterly earnings would nearly double from a year ago.
• A Record Backlog Signals Demand Isn't a Blip
The Q3 book-to-bill ratio — a measure of new orders versus shipments — hit a record 1.6-to-1, and orders booked and shipped within the quarter were just 11% of total revenue. That means 89% of sales were already in the backlog, giving unusual visibility into future quarters. The company raised its full-year data center segment growth guidance from 35–40% to over 60%.
• Valuation Demands Flawless Execution
Despite strong operating momentum, MTSI trades at a high earnings multiple, making the stock sensitive to execution and future-growth expectations.
Adjusted gross margin reached 59.7% , and adjusted operating income nearly doubled to $107.7 million, with operating margins expanding 630 basis points year over year. Profitability is improving fast — but at $280, the market is pricing in sustained perfection. Record results reinforce the near-term catalyst around AI demand, but they do not remove the key risk that data center and telecom revenues can remain volatile and highly cyclical. One soft quarter could erase months of gains.
