Reddit has been added to Australia's list of social media companies that will be required to ban users under the age of 16. The Australian government's directive, announced by the federal communications minister, also includes the video streaming platform Kick and expands the list of companies which already includes platforms like Facebook, Snapchat, and TikTok. The mandate will require the designated companies to take reasonable steps to prevent users under 16 from holding accounts starting from December 10. Platforms that fail to comply with the new regulations could face substantial fines of up to $49.5 million. The move signals increasing governmental scrutiny on social media platforms and their younger users.
