Rio Tinto’s Bell Bay aluminum smelter in Tasmania faces an uncertain future as negotiations with Hydro Tasmania stall. An estimated A$60 million annual gap separates the company’s required price from the utility’s offer.

The current power agreement expires on December 31, 2026. This deadlock places more than 550 direct jobs at risk.

The Tasmanian government is requesting federal support to bridge the financial gap. Eligibility for the Green Aluminium Production Credit scheme remains unclear because the facility already uses hydroelectric power.
