SK Hynix is considering building its first major memory chip manufacturing plant in Miyagi, Japan. The potential investment is valued at tens of trillions of won, equivalent to tens of billions of U.S. dollars.
The facility aims to expand production capacity for memory chips used in artificial intelligence applications. Speculation followed SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won’s recent visit to the Miyagi region, which the Japanese government is developing into a semiconductor hub.
SK Hynix confirmed it is evaluating locations with necessary infrastructure but stated no final decision has been reached. The project would mark the first major production base in Japan by a South Korean chipmaker.
If the plan proceeds, it would significantly reshape the semiconductor supply chain across Northeast Asia.
