Sony Interactive Entertainment announced a new machine learning-based upscaling technology for next-generation PlayStation consoles.

The AI-driven frame generation system, codenamed Project Amethyst, resulted from a collaboration with AMD. Sony expects to implement the technology in the PlayStation 5 Pro in 2026.

The new system will replace the current PSSR upscaler. It aims to deliver performance comparable to AMD’s FSR 4 for PCs.

Lead architect Mark Cerny confirmed the development will improve framerates and image quality on existing hardware. Sony stated no new console hardware is planned for release in 2026. The company's immediate focus remains on software enhancements for the PS5 Pro.
