SpaceX faces mounting criticism for its planned constellation of AI compute satellites, designed as orbital data centers. Astronomers and environmental groups warn that deploying these satellites in a sun-synchronous orbit (SSO) would dramatically increase light pollution. This could potentially ruin the night sky for astronomical research and public viewing.
The new SSO satellites differ from the existing Starlink constellation, which operates in low-Earth orbit and can enter Earth's shadow. SSO satellites are designed for constant sun exposure to power energy-intensive AI hardware. This constant illumination means they would reflect sunlight towards Earth throughout the night, presenting a fundamentally different and more disruptive issue than current satellites.
The backlash introduces a significant hurdle for a key component of SpaceX's future growth strategy following its recent IPO.
