Suncor Energy announced second-quarter adjusted earnings of C$3.23 per share, surpassing analyst expectations. The company generated a record quarterly free funds flow of $4.0 billion ($3.38 per share) and matched its record for adjusted funds from operations at $5.3 billion.

The strong results were driven by its downstream business, which posted record Q2 refining throughput and product sales. This performance offset a year-over-year decline in total upstream production, which fell to 760,900 barrels per day due in part to planned maintenance.

In light of the strong cash flow, Suncor returned nearly $1.8 billion to shareholders through dividends and buybacks during the quarter. The company also announced plans to increase its monthly share repurchases to $500 million, up from $350 million, beginning in August.
